Does my pet need supplements? A Leadr a day keeps the vet away.

We love our pets more than life itself. Sharing your home with a furry friend is proven to reduce stress and anxiety, provide a sense of purpose, ease loneliness, keep you fit, help you live longer, and generally boost your overall mental health and wellbeing. Anyone who’s come home to their dog at the end of a long day doesn’t need a study to tell them that.

Unfortunately, the same can’t be said of our pets. In the 1970s, the average golden retriever lived to 17. Today, their average lifespan is 10. Pet wellbeing has been declining, and rates of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, cancer and arthritis are climbing. It’s not hard to see why.

Good health starts in the gut.

If we are what we eat, it’s our responsibility as pet parents to ensure our offspring get the best. As part of a healthy diet, supplements are a simple, effective (and cost-effective) way to ensure your pets get all the support they need to live happy, healthy, whole lives.

Just like in human diets, adding vitamins and supplements to your pet’s daily routine can fill in any nutritional gaps and help prevent specific health conditions like stress, anxiety, arthritis and skin issues. There are mountains of evidence that show the benefits of ingredients like omega 3 for hair, skin and nails, ashwaganda for anxiety, or glucosamine for healthy joints.

So can my pet and I share vitamins?

It's a complicated answer, but in short – it’s not ideal. Vitamins for people are not made for pets. Cats and dogs live different lives from us. They move differently, sleep differently, eat differently, and experience the world from a different point of view.

So while they need the same quality of care as humans, pets need supplements that target their own specific health needs. You wouldn’t take their vitamins, so why should they take yours?

Leading the way

All of our supplements are formulated with the same rigorous approach the science, evidence and testing as we would for humans. In clinical trials, our ingredients have been shown to:

• Reduce stress and anxiety
• Improve stress-related behaviours like barking, marking and aggression
• Soothe nervous system function
• Strengthen joints and mobility
• Reduce inflammation
• Keep coats soft and shiny
• Improve itchy, flaky skin
• Promote healthy brain and eye development

If you’re unsure which supplement is right for your pet, you can take the quiz, join our Facebook group, connect with vets and pet parents on Slack, or askaquestion@leadrpet.com.
